Frenotomy

This procedure dates back to the 18th century, when it was a rather common practice for midwives to divide the frenulum with a sharp fingernail. Medical authors of that time also began recommending it for infants with breastfeeding difficulties. There is still controversy regarding when frenotomy is indicated, but it seems reasonable that physicians caring for newborns all be skilled in performing this simple procedure. When indicated, frenotomy in the newborn period can quickly improve a "poor latch" on the breast, and prolong the mother's ability and willingness to breastfeed.

Thinking of braces? Why not consider invisible braces!

Invisible braces is a removable orthodontic appliance offered as an alternative to more traditional braces. If you are a candidate for invisible braces you can maintain your smile esthetics while straightening your teeth.

The removable orthodontic appliance incorporates a series of invisible (clear) plastic aligners that fit comfortably over your teeth and are designed to move them gradually into the desired position.

Teeth Grinding- SYMPTOMS, CAUSES, TREATMENT

Most people grind and clench their teeth from time to time, called bruxism. Occasional teeth grinding does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise.

WHY DO PEOPLE GRIND THEIR TEETH?
Grinding can be caused by stress and anxiety, it often occurs during sleep and it most likely caused by an abnormal bite or missing teeth.

SYMPTOMS

Tooth Decay Due to Soda & Sports Drinks

One can of regular pop per day contains the maximum recommended intake of sugar a day!Excessive intake of pop/ sports drinks is detrimental to your health. People who drink 3 or more sugary drinks daily have 62% more dental decay, fillings and tooth loss. Bacteria in the mouth feed on this sugar then spit out acid on the teeth causing decay. Most sports drinks and pop contain citric acid which further damages the teeth. Acids naturally occurring in citrus fruits like lemons can also break down enamel. Dentists consider Mountain Dew to be the worse due to high amounts of sugar and caffine.

Are electric toothbrushes better than manual ones?

Most dentists think so, if you use them the right way. Electric toothbrushes prevent you from brushing too hard which can wear away the enamel- the outer protective layer of the tooth. Most electric toothbrushes have a buit-in timer for 2 minutes which is recommended. Some electric toothbrushes go as fast as 40,000 strokes per second and you can't do that manually.

If you prefer to stick to a manual toothbrush just make sure it's labeled SOFT or EXTRA SOFT.

Tooth whitening? Why not?

Tooth whitening is the number one requested and performed cosmetic dental procedure. Tooth whitening is a procedure that lightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discoloration.

A thin coating forms on your teeth, throughout the day, which attracts stains. The tooth's enamel contains pores that hold stains.

The importance of X-Rays

For most people, a complete radiographic survey should be done every 3 years, and a "check up" or "recall" set every 6 to 12 months.

A complete set of x-rays is estimated to expose you to the same amount of radiation you get on a flight from San Francisco to Seattle. Doctors use x-rays as an aid in diagnosing problems.

Without x-rays "seeing" the problem will be difficult if not impossible.
